EFF Wants Free-Range iPhones

Open or closed, the iPhone is the best mobile platform ever. It has managed to upset every other vendor in this space with something users wanted. This is in no small part due to Apple’s rigorously policed platform, that many people are critical of:

I would like to have a “developer mode” for users of the iPhone that doesn’t require signed code (and doesn’t require a paid Apple ADC membership). I don’t think Apple’s reasons for not having one are nefarious or malicious — they like to control the user experience so that it is consistently the best. I’ve used a BlackBerry, S60 devices (Nokia N-series, E-series handsets), Sony Ericsson UIQ, Palm OS, Maemo, and others. They all sucked. They all had terrible software, terrible applications, and the hardware was slow and ugly.

The EFF doesn’t tell you that many applications do store their data in open formats (raw text and XML for example) and that it supports vCard and vCal.

This is probably the most hilarious thing I’ve read all week.The state of Indiana was going to pay $1B for a computer and software from IBM that only had to process 10,000 applications for welfare (all the way up from 4,200) over the Internet.

And they couldn’t do it.

Please tell me you want to invest in my new start-up where we can charge HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to states and governments, over and over again, for about 100 days of work from 3 guys I find on CraigsList and $100,000 in hardware cost for 4 years.

I am writing a paper or article (not sure on direction yet) on WoW RMT and account compromises and would like to speak with the following:

a) People on or off-the-record from Blizzard willing to talk about RMT and account compromises for World of Warcraft
b) People from a RMT operation (staff/support/management/executive)
c) People that has access to corporate/institutional VPN servers and firewalls and would like to discuss intrusions on those services
d) People that knowingly participate in deploying malware or phishing sites to compromise battlenet/WoW account credentials or use those accounts to sell in-game Gold wholesale or individually. (Long shot but what the hell)

The Non-review of the SteelSeries WoW Mouse

This would have been a review of the SteelSeries WoW mouse with many LEDs and flashy bits and more buttons than most people would know what to do with.

The problem is that the software supplied by SteelSeries for this mouse crashes my Windows 7 64bit workstation when I’m playing the game, which is the least diserable trait in a gaming mouse as far as I’m concerned.
