Al Gore slams ‘trivialities and nonsense’ in news media

Al Gore slams ‘trivialities and nonsense’ in news media:

“What is it about our collective decision-making process that has led us to this state of affairs where we spend much more time in the public forum talking about - or receiving information about - Britney Spears shaving her head or Paris Hilton going to jail?” Gore asked.

Yeah, this has been really bothering me lately. It really disturbs me how passive people can be sometimes, and I still haven’t figured out why people pretend to pay attention to certain issues around election times. There are all sorts of bogus non-issues that get trotted out at certain times of the year.

It is like being in a political Sweeps Week.

And we’re left with things nobody is going to do anything about but that will incite indignation and fear, and pop culture.

Great.

I’m feeling a little apathetic about our little knee-jerk nation today.

Chex Mix Update

Okay, the saga of Chex Mix Pretzel Content continues on a webpage of its very own right here on kvet.ch.

Together we can fight these salty interlopers.

Boing Boing: Bratton: LAPD attacks on reporters, protestors "worst in 37 years"

Sasha grabbed some video and sent to a mailing list I’m on, and I dutifully forwarded it on to Xeni Jardin. There is some amazing footage and information to process in the following post at boingboing, so if you haven’t read much about this (especially if you don’t live in the United States), it is worth reading about.

Boing Boing: Bratton: LAPD attacks on reporters, protestors “worst in 37 years”:

LAPD brutally attacked thousands of families celebrating international workers’ day in downtown macarthur park, using rubber bullets, batons, motorcycles and chemical spray. They even attacked several members of the media, including Fox News and Telemundo correspondents! It was so ludicrous that they are no longer even attempting to spin it in the standard way (ie, ‘we used controlled nonlethal force against a few troublemakers). They have abandoned that line and even the chief (bratton) has admitted that it got out of hand.

SANS Internet Storm Center; Cooperative Network Security Community – Internet Security – isc

An important note from ISC about contributions to potentially false charities after the Virginia Tech shootings.

SANS Internet Storm Center; Cooperative Network Security Community – Internet Security – isc:

Even faster then for Hurricane Katrina, new domains are registered for the VA Tech shootings. Some of them are used for benevolent purposes. However, a good share of them are parked for auction and even used for fraudulent donations.

We setup a page with about 450 different domain names that look suspect. If you have a few minutes, help us to categorize the domains. You need to log in (so we can prevent bad input).

For details, see http://isc.sans.org/domaincheck.html .
(Update 0900UTC Thank you for your help – we had all domains checked in record time!)
(Update 1430UTC Of course the above 450 wasn’t the end of it. We just found a handful more that need checking out. Your help is greatly appreciated!)

If you would like to help the victims: VA Tech setup a site here:
http://www.vt.edu/tragedy/memorial_fund.php

Quick unrelated update: We are also seeing spam that contains malware advertising itself as a video clip of the event.

Chex Mix Pretzel Content

Chex Mix Pretzel Content:

That is the page where I’ll be keeping track of the pretzel content in my favorite snack, Chex Mix Sweet and Salty. I hate pretzels, and they used to have a ton of them in every bag. This is slowly being resolved, with weekly phone calls to General Mills asking for fewer pretzels.

Don’t ruin this for me.

why i am screaming at you.

I’m screaming at you because you aren’t a cigarette and I’m not smoking you.

Study finds one-third in D.C. illiterate – Yahoo! News

Study finds one-third in D.C. illiterate – Yahoo! News:

About one-third of the people living in the national’s capital are functionally illiterate, compared with about one-fifth nationally, according to a report on the District of Columbia.

Adults are considered functionally illiterate if they have trouble doing such things as comprehending bus schedules, reading maps and filling out job applications.

The sound of ten-thousand punch-lines. That’s what you’re hearing.

imified – Broken for Backpack via SSL

via Lifehack.org
:

With Imified you can use Web applications like Google Calendar, Basecamp, Backpack, Remember the Milk, WordPress, and Blogger, all from within your favorite instant messaging client.

But what it doesn’t do is work with your Backpack if you use SSL. I wrote them last week about this, and it still doesn’t work. I’d like to use imified a bit more, and it seems quite interesting but I’m not really that sure what I can trust with it.

On the imified privacy and security page it says this:

Your data is stored encrypted on our servers in a secure data center in the Rocky Mountains. All interaction on the Imified website is handled over SSL. We do not ask that you enter login details for accessing an application over IM. To add a service we present you with a link to a secure web page for the purpose of entering this information. We store this data securely so you can interact with your services over your IM client without having to repeatedly enter your login details. We encrypt your data using private key 128 bit AES encryption. Please be aware that the IM messages you send to Imified are not and cannot be encrypted due to the nature of the protocol. We have no control over this.

We personally use Imified all day long to interact with a number of services and our friends and family do to. We take every precaution to keep your data safe and secure.

I understand that the transactions between the services are as safe as their APIs are, and I also understand that my IM traffic isn’t encrypted. I’m curious how the data is stored encrypted on their end though, since obviously it has to be decrypted to present it to me.

So are the filesystems encrypted? Is that why they tell me that the data center is in the Bat Cave somewhere in Rocky Mountains?

I’m more interested in knowing what the providers of applications like this do for code review. What standards they hold themselves to. What best-practices and guidelines and methodology for testing and assessment are used, if any.

The service is free, and has no warranty. But I think users should start asking for more information about how their data is retained, retrieved, and what has been done to prevent things such as another user gaining access to My Stuff by impersonating me to imified by sending queries for data that belongs to me. There are any number of ways that this could happen—there are, after all, no fewer than 5 ways to get at the service, over 5 different protocols.

Listerine and Diet Mountain Dew

I always forget that after I use Listerine, Diet Mountain Dew tastes like eggs.

Hard-boiled, even. That may be a liiiiiittle past their prime.
